Mobile internet services in the country, which have been suspended since the evening of May 9, are expected to be restored shortly, we have checked with sources.
If sources are to be believed then social media websites (Twitter, Facebook etc.) that were made inaccessible in Pakistan, will also start coming back instantly.
Highly placed sources in telecom industry told ProPakistani that they have received intimation from relevant authorities regarding the restoration of data services.
When asked about the restoration of data networks, a Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) spokesperson confirmed that an intimation is underway for mobile telecom operators to restore internet services on cellular networks.
Mobile phone users can expect their data services to back within minutes to few hours, depending on where they live, as the network takes a while to go fully online throughout the country.
The mobile broadband services were suspended across Pakistan on the evening of May 9 (Tuesday) following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
The services were suspended on directions of the Ministry of Interior.
Cabinet expresses displeasure at ban
It is pertinent to mention here that during the cabinet meeting held earlier in the day, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal strongly criticized the decision to suspend mobile internet services.
The minister said that millions of freelancers and workers of ride hailing and delivery services are struggling due to the suspension of internet services. He also highlighted that telecom operators are losing millions of rupees in revenue while at the same time the government is also suffering revenue loss.
Subsequently, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah to address the issue and restore internet services in the country except for ‘sensitive areas’.
