PESHAWAR: Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, Engineer Amir Muqam, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent police actions involving shelling and baton-charging of municipal representatives in Peshawar. The incident occurred during a protest staged by local government representatives outside the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, highlighting ongoing tensions over developmental funds.
According to Radio Pakistan, Engineer Amir Muqam criticized the violent response to what he described as a peaceful protest, stating that such actions are in direct contradiction to democratic values. The Minister further criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, accusing it of hypocrisy and claiming that its double standards have been badly exposed in this incident.
The protest in question involved municipal representatives who were demanding the release of developmental funds, which they argue are essential for local governance and community welfare. The harsh police response has drawn significant criticism from political figures and activists alike. Engineer Amir Muqam has urged the government to take immediate steps to address the grievances of the municipal representatives, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles and ensuring the rights of protestors are protected.
